Wondering what to do for the weekend, I stumbled across a post in TimeOut Singapore that there is a Harry Potter Exhibition going on in the Singapore Philatelic Museum (the huge HP fan inside me shouted yippee!).
There are a couple of niche museums in Singapore that I have never been to (haha!) – the Philatelic being one and another being the Toy Museum 🙂 This was the perfect opportunity to go visit the first one. My husband agreed in less than a heartbeat since he used to collect stamps in childhood and is also a big Harry Potter fan.
So on a fine sunny Sunday morning we headed down to the quaint looking building on Coleman Street – it’s just over a century old and has served as a school, a Christian bookstore and since 1995 as the “stamps” museum. This is a photo-blog of the exhibitions that were on.
The entrance has a small shop and the ticket counter – free for Singaporeans and PRs – where they give cute stamps to stick on the shirt to mark visitors. My elder one (3 years of age) was very excited about it.
The first room was an exhibition on postal stamps…among other things, it had some original Penny Blacks and some interesting trivia like why England is the only country in the world that doesn’t print its name on its stamps (did you ever notice??).
And then we went to the 1st floor where the Harry Potter exhibition was on – it wasn’t a large one but quite nicely done with lots of memorabilia (some from private collections on loan), posters …
…some cool exhibits like a compartment of the Hogwarts express…
…or the plumbing in Chamber of Secrets…
…Dobbyyyyyyyyyy 🙂 …
…the entrance to the secret platform….
…wands…
…some things which caught the imagination of my kids…
…and many more! There was also a surprise exhibit by the students of NTU (I think…) which will delight all fans of the novels and movies – which I am not going to reveal just yet but somewhere in this post!
There were couple more exhibitions – some snippets below…
Model mailboxes from around the world…
…a room on wildlife….
…which was a big hit with my puzzle obsessed boy…
An exhibition on the history of Singapore through stamps…
…and some more jigsaw puzzles…
Lastly, there was a Shakespeare exhibition which seemed coolly done in a kid friendly way…
…lots of interesting trivia here…
I loved the infographic.
And oh! – the surprise exhibit were magic portraits – the subjects move when someone comes in front of the pictures just like in the movies! Go check them out – the Harry Potter exhibition runs till 25th Jun 2017 – catch it till it lasts!
Hope you enjoyed the post,
till then,
xx
